If you're in a small space now or are looking to downsize, it may seem overwhelming if the space is not what you're used to. But smaller spaces shouldn't be seen as a negative! This gives you an opportunity to not only decide what you really need in your home, but to find multi-functional pieces and creative ways to help you get the most out of your space.

Here are 10 ways to save space in your home:

Doorway Shelves

The space above a doorway is usually under-utilized, but has endless opportunities! Shelves above doorways can hold some of your book collection, house plants, travel souvenirs, towels/linens in your bathroom, and more. Just make sure the shelf is put up securely and you've guaranteed yourself multiple new spots to display items.

Multi-Purpose Bookcase

There's no need to compromise your vision due to lack of space. A low bookcase can double as a sofa table to provide you with additional storage.

Large Furniture

It may seem like big furniture + small space = bad idea, but the answer will surprise you! By using larger furniture and accent accessories, you're reducing the number of items in your home and minimizing visual clutter.

Hidden Storage Coffee Table

Hidden storage is a small space's best friend. If your home lacks storage for things such as linens, your blankets or spare throw pillows can be tucked away neatly in your chest or ottoman coffee table. If you like the more open and airy look for your space, utilize under-the-table baskets or boxes to store these same items.

Window Seat

Under the window is another spot that usually is not used to it's full potential. A window seat provides extra seating while allowing you to hideaway any items that need to be stored. This is the perfect opportunity for seasonal items to have a permanent home out of the way.

Fold Out Dining Table

There are so many styles of fold-out dining tables available, so you won't have to settle for something you normally wouldn't choose! This is a great way to create a separate dining space but only when you need it. The rest of the time? The table can slide neatly away or fold up to appear as a small shelving unit. It's almost like magic.

Hidden Space

The space under your bed is perfect for storing luggage between trips and weekends away or seasonal shoes, and the space under your couch can be used to store DVDs instead of filling up bookshelves beside the TV. But that's not all! Add a low dresser or a second rod to your closet to allow for extra clothing storage. Better yet? Try vacuum-seal bags to switch out your seasonal clothing and store it under the bed with your storage.

Minimalist Work Space

One of the best ways to save space in your home is shelves to the ceiling. An even better way of using that space is shelves from half-way up the wall to the ceiling while using the bottom half to create your clutter-free workspace. Shelves above your desk gives you the storage needed for office supplies and creates the appearance that your ceiling is higher.

No Nightstands

If your bedroom doesn't have a lot of space on either side of the bed for symmetrical nightstands, there are still ways to create a cozy space with no space at all! Floating shelves and wall sconces create a minimalist look for your cozy room while still providing the functionality of a bedroom set.

Display Cookware

If you're low on space in your home, you're most likely low on space in the kitchen. This may feel overwhelming as cookware is not small but is very necessary. Use wall-mounted wire shelving or pegboard to display your cookware (especially if it's beautiful) and kitchen utensils to keep your counter top clear of any clutter. Your'e also saving drawer space for your pantry items and larger cookware that can't be displayed. And that's not all! Use the space on top of your cupboards to store larger items that aren't used very often- perfect for cookware used seasonally or back-up sets of dishes.
